Movies of The Month: February preview

It's already February, and with a new month comes a new list of films. Its the period in which directors cleverly release Oscar-baited films and also Valentine's day films become a thing. This is our roundup of the top films to go see in cinemas this month.

Gold

Directed by Stephan Gaghan

Release Date: February 2nd, showing at all mainstream Perth cinemas

Alright Alright Alright. The “Mcconaissance” remerges this February with the tale of Kenny Wells, a businessman looking for gold loosely based on controversial Bre-X CEO David Walsh. The film is a darkly funny and entertaining take on the real life 1990 events that took place in Canada, although it may not be of Oscar nominated caliber, it’s still a joyful way to spend an afternoon.


Patriot’s Day

Directed by Peter Berg

Release Date: February 2nd, showing at all mainstream Perth cinemas

Grab your tissues folks, this one is going to be a real tear jerker. Patriot’s day follows Mark “Marky Mark” Wahlberg as a real life police officer dealing with the events of the Boston Marathon bombings. With superb performances from heavyweights Wahlberg, John Goodman and Kevin Bacon, Patriots Day takes you into the devastating events and provides a huge punch to the heart.


Manchester by The Sea

Directed by Kenneth Lonergan

Release Date: February 2nd, showing at all mainstream Perth cinemas

The Ugly cry movies sadly don’t stop for February, as Manchester by the Sea is a hauntingly beautiful tale about a man struggling with his new role as guardian of his nephew after his brother dies. With Casey Affleck’s golden globe winning performance, and now six Oscar nominations under its belt, Manchester By the Sea is a critically acclaimed film that deserves all the accolades it receives.

Fifty Shades Darker

Directed by James Foley

Release Date: February 9th, showing at all mainstream Perth cinemas

People rejoice! Everyone’s favourite guilty pleasure is back. The worldwide phenomenon that is The Fifty Shades of Grey books/movies returns to our screens this February. The second film promises a darker look into Anna and Christian’s relationship as dangerous outsiders intervene. Loved by many, mocked by many, I’ll let you make your own mind up. Either way, it is set to be the blockbuster hit of the month.

Fences

Directed by Denzel Washington

Release Date: February 9th, showing at all mainstream Perth cinemas

Directed by and starring everyone’s favourite powerhouse, Denzel Washington, Fences is a typical Oscar-bait film about race and family. However, fences pushes past this stereotype by providing two very extraordinary performances from Washington and the always beautiful Viola Davis. Go see this with your mamma and make sure you give her a big old hug.


Hidden Figures

Directed by Theodore Melfi

Release Date: February 16th, showing at all mainstream Perth cinemas

Three women set out to defy both science and racial boundaries in the true story of how man finally got to the moon. With music by Hans Zimmer and Pharrell Williams, Hidden Figures is a remarkable tale of how three African American women overcame prejudice and proved their opposers wrong. Breaking last year’s #OscarSowhite, the film is nominated for three academy awards, including best picture.

Silence

Directed by Martin Scorsese

Release Date: February 16th, showing at Cinema Paradiso and Windsor Cinema (Luna Palace Cinemas)

Arguably the godfather of modern cinema, Martin Scorsese, finally brings his 26 year old passion project to the screen. Based on the 1966 novel, Silence follows two priests, played by Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver, in 17th century Portugal as they travel to Japan looking for their mentor, played by Liam Neeson. A stunning film that might only be for the most dedicated of film goers, Silence should be on everyone’s list to spend a day watching and dissecting.

T2 Trainspotting

Directed by Danny Boyle

Release Date: February 23rd, showing at all mainstream Perth cinemas

Its finally here baby. The sequel to cult favourite and arguably one of the most striking and brilliant films from the 90’s, Trainspotting, opens late this month. With the original director, original cast and hopefully the original sense of excellence its predecessor brought to the screen, it’s safe to say we are very excited to choose life once again.

Stay tuned for our March list where we anticipate gems such as the Beauty and The Beast Live Action re make and the screen adaptation of the cult Australian novel we all read in school, Jasper Jones.
