FILM REVIEW: Dolly Llama UNCUT @ Luna Leederville

Recently at Luna Leederville, local Perth production group Dolly Llama Productions (organised and led by Hassibullah Kushkaki) put on their second screening of 10 independent short films.

The most impressive part? It was all put together in under 6 months.

With a turnout of over 200 people, Dolly Llama Productions took home a win for the Perth film and media scene, as well as themselves.

The night was a dynamic array of experiences, emotions and ideas. I could see growth and development within each following film. With every film, a new sense of integrity was built with better equipment, better writing and better edits, and so foth.

Here’s a list of my favourites from top to bottom:

  • The Rise and the Fall: Tony Bolony Story Written and directed by Hassibullah Kushkaki

  • This Is Life Written and directed by Juan Felipe Sarmiento

  • A Broken Sink in Leederville Written and directed by Hassibullah Kushkaki

  • Watch Out Written and directed by Nitzan Hanin

  • Slice of Cheese Written and directed by Hassibulah Kushkaki

  • Perth… I Love You Directed by Hasibulah Kushkaki

  • Lord Barry of Warren Written by Justin Limb

  • Night of The Huntsman Written and directed by James Dudfield

  • WWIII Written and directed by Hassibulah Kushkaki

  • System of Lies (featuring Our Demise)

A tale of stupid people pushing stupid boundaries, Tony Bolony Story was top on my list thanks to its dry humour, hilarious directing and stereotypically moronic characters, set around a ‘friendly’ poker game, an amateur makes the biggest mistake of his year. Second on my list was This Is Life, a heart-wrenching tale that shows us the interconnectivity of life, the unseen consequences of our actions and heartbreaking realities. This Is Life tells the story of an obnoxious man, hating every part of his life and making sure it’s everyone’s problem too, all for his day to get worse.

I was impressed at the wide reach Dolly Llama Productions had made to collaborate with musicians, actors, comedians and live performers for the films – a definite good sign of projects to come. Being an artist myself, I quickly caught onto the support the crowd gave, especially from the large community of actors, comedians ad filmmakers of Perth.

I am excited to see what comes next for Dolly Llama Productions, and hopefully I’ll be there to witness it!
