LIVE REVIEW: Jade Imagine's debut album tour @ Mojos

Saturday night was the last show in the Australian leg of Jade Imagine’s debut album tour as well as a massive year of touring with the likes of Stella Donnelly and POND. For this reason – and that they are signed to Courtney Barnett and Jen Clohers’ Milk! Records – I expected a massive vibe from their show at Mojos.
The creation of lead singer Jade McInally, Jade Imagine has been seeing some serious playtime on independent radio around Australia. Their debut album Basic Love is full of the kind of songs that remind you to live life to the full and reject the 9 to 5 grind while you dance along to the dark, dream pop sounds. That they had secured solid support from perennially underrated The Spunloves, the ever-present Jacob Diamond and Airline Food made this the perfect lineup for lovers of indie rock.
Lead singer and Melbourne stalwart Jade McInally appeared on stage in a fantastic white boiler suit that changed colour with the stage lighting. Just as I thought to myself that everyone should be wearing these on stage, she announced she was going to burn it after the show.
"I've been wearing this every day for 3 months now, let’s do a ceremonious burning after the show," she said.
And with such an intimate crowd in attendance, it’s entirely possible that this could have happened in the Mojos courtyard. By the time they started the first few bars of the second single Remote Control, the band seemed to have relaxed and were ready to engage the audience in their performance.
‘Don’t Say It’s Over’ starts with bars that trick you into thinking you’re about to hear a Paul Kelly cover then morphs into synthy dream pop, while ‘Confused’ got people out on the dance floor. The T-Rex inspired glam rock banger of a tune ‘Big Old House’ closed out the night, and the band left the stage to prepare for the European leg of the tour in February 2020.
