LIVE REVIEW: Matthew Young @ Jack Rabbit Slim's

80's inspired pop/RnB artist Matthew Young recently strolled through Perth, performing his high-charting singles from his recent EP Fruit with ease and versatility. The bright sounds of ‘Hey’ and ‘Panama City’ had the audience feeling mellow and relaxed, spreading good vibes throughout Jack Rabbit Slim's.

Supporting Matthew was electro rock trio Priscilla pumping heavy tunes and getting the juices flowing with heavy bass end bangers and razor knife basslines.

By the end of the night was a packed room of mellow youths, slow grinding to the calming tunes Matthew Young had yet to share in upcoming releases (along with ones that he had released).

Despite the colourful love songs and ballads, the performance was lacking in enthusiasm. The artist almost seemed disinterested in the event and his stage persona failed to reflect his music. Perhaps it was the feeling of repetitiveness in his performance; knowing when exactly each song should be played and being way too stuck in a routine.

On the other hand, with Perth as one of his last stops, he could've been tired of travelling the subcontinent.

The performance could have been something truly remarkable to watch had there been a spectacle to the eye, whether it was through Matthew Young's clothes or actions.

Regardless of this, when the NZ artist was singing, you could see an entire room of individuals (mostly girls who dragged their boyfriends along) come together and feel the calm energy flow.
