Revelation Film Festival Preview: Goblin Plays Suspiria

Revelation Film Festival Preview: Goblin Plays Suspiria

Having trouble deciding on which films you should watch? Have no fear! Over the next few days, the writers here at IN will give you some suggestions of films we're most looking forward to in the 2013 Revelation Film Festival lineup.  In this case, we preview this soon-to-be sold-out event, Goblin Plays Suspiria

Suspiria is arguably considered by many to be both one of the best films by Italian giallo ledged Dario Argento and also one the greatest horror films of all time. The film is a dreamy landscape of colors and camera movements that create one of the most visually exciting worlds of freight the cinema has ever seen. However, Susupiria’s beauty is not at all limited to its visuals, its soundtrack fits right up there with that of The Exorcist or Halloween for its fans as one of the most memorable and exciting soundtracks in horror. This synthetically fascinating score was composed for the film by Italian rock group Goblin.

As a young film student I’ve never had the chance to see many of my favorite films within a cinema and projected onto the big screen, this special screening of Suspiria not only offers that opportunity to experience the film at its cinematic best but also with Goblin themselves playing live along side. Things like this have been done for many silent films and I once had the pleasure of seeing Fritz Lang’s Metropolis screened with a live orchestra.

Truly exciting, Suspiria promises to be even more so, if only for the visceral excitement that the film promises in its music cues and on screen scares. The marriage of images and music in cinema always tends to create something sublime when done well, with live music this is taken even further and the experience becomes one that at times is overwhelmingly beautiful. I have no doubt that Goblin will achieve this.

This rather rare screening of Suspiria promises to be a truly memorable and exciting experience, even if you have never seen the film and are simply a horror or even avid film fan I urge you to attend, it will surely be night of terrifying thrills, gorgeous imagery and of course powerful music.
