PREVIEW: Experience the heart of Australian opera and classical music with "Homegrown"
On Friday, 13th December, the Banksia Room at Claremont Showgrounds will host "Homegrown," an evening concert showcasing works by renowned Australian composers, poets, and librettists. Presented by Bloomhouse Projects, this intimate recital will feature performances by internationally acclaimed Australian expats alongside emerging local talents in Australian opera and classical music.
The program highlights Australian composers and poets including Margaret Sutherland, Ross Fiddes, Rod Moran, Chris Milbourn, and Emma Jayakumar, offering stories and themes that resonate deeply with homegrown experiences.
Soprano Daniella Sicari returns to Perth with fresh musical collaborations developed with British and Australian creatives. Joining her are international pianist and WAAPA faculty member Tonya Lemoh and oboist Niamh Dell, recently back from the UK and Germany's contemporary classical scene. Dell will perform Gyfu by Liza Lim, a solo oboe piece inspired by Viking runes symbolising exchange, partnership, and union—an artistic reflection on shared human experiences. This year’s emerging artist, James Pinneri, recipient of the Diane & Dr Ken Collins AO Award, also joins the lineup, bringing a passion for new works and music production. Perth-based composer Emma Jayakumar, known for Bell Birds, Our Little Inventor, and The Adventures of Snugglepot & Cuddlepie, contributes a charming artsong guaranteed to make you smile.
Other highlights on the program include excerpts from Ross Fiddes’ Closing Time, a staged song cycle that reflects on everyday life and the emotional journey of living with dementia, featuring poetry by Karin de Novellis. The program also includes songs from Lemon Tree, a song cycle by Pierre Flasse with poetry by Rod Moran, exploring the evolving sense of home between Perth and Melbourne, with unique vocal nuances reflecting the Australian accent.
Homegrown offers a rich cultural experience designed for classical music lovers and newcomers alike. Expect to hear stories that feel close to home, performed live in several WA premieres—a truly unique and shared artistic encounter.
