St. ALi Italian Film Festival 2024: "Confidenza" is an airtight, breathless psychodrama

Confidenza (Trust) sets a very high bar for the upcoming ST. Ali Italian Film Festival.

This psychorama thriller, starring the ferocious Frederica Rosellini as Teresa Quadraro, moves ceaselessly toward its resolution like a thousand-tonne locomotive. Even the opening scenes, set in a more innocent period of the protagonist’s life, seem tense with the knowledge of the story’s direction. Guilt and vengeance are the only poles on the moral compass of the characters and the story. They’re omnipresent, and the only feelings that compel our characters. To watch Pietro (Elio Germano) scurry away from both while Teresa hunts him down by the light of the truth is enormously entertaining. Mention must be made of Thom Yorke’s perfectly complementary soundtrack that excellently conveys the needle-fine nuance of the story’s emotional bondage game.

The experimental moments, those short, strange breakaways of hypothetical murder or suicide, bring a masterful balance of tension and release to Confidenza, and yet not once did it feel formulaic or contrived. This movie belongs beside the thriller greats like Memento and Suspiria, there are no two ways about it.

Please see it for yourself.
