5 films you should see at Revelation Film Festival 2024

If you're looking for something to do this Winter, the upcoming Rev Fest has you covered! Perth's very own international film festival runs from the 3rd to the 14th of July, boasting a massive selection of critically acclaimed picks. From the highly anticipated to the highly eccentric, here's a preview of a few worth checking out.

1.     Kinds of Kindness

First up, Kinds of Kindness; Yorgos Lanthimos' next newest feature brings Emma Stone, Willem Defoe and Jesse Plemons together again for another plunge into Lanthimos' weird world of surrealist comedy. Following this hard-hitting cast across three different stories linked by a single common thread. Preview audiences are calling this "gripping... fulfilling...", and make mention of a "Dog World". This is a must see for me.

When and where:

7th July (5:30PM) & 9th July (6:20PM) @ Luna Leederville

2.     Sasquatch Sunset

Sasquatch Sunset is a cryptid comedy from the US following a family of the famously-hard-to-photograph bipeds over the course of a year. Audiences get a glimpse into what life might be like if we never evolved. Jesse Eisenberg often is at his best when he’s doing weird projects like this.

When and where:

 9th July (6:20PM) & 9th July (9:10PM) @ Luna Leederville

3.     You Should Have Been Here Yesterday

A documentary described as a "poetic homage to Australia's early surf-culture with unearthed footage set to an original soundtrack" seems to be more than your average non-fic surf-flick. The trailer uses experimental visuals to blend the old footage together, like the recent Bowie doco Moonage Daydream or the less recent Song Remains the Same. If the full film follows that style, You Should Have Been Here Yesterday is sure to be an awesome trip for surf and non-surf audiences alike.

When and where:

 4th July (6:30PM) & 9th July (7:00PM) @ Luna Leederville

6th July (7:00PM) @ Luna on SX

4.     Tenement

To spice up my festival experience, I'm also planning on catching Tenement, a Cambodian horror dealing with generational trauma in the nation's dark political past. Synopsis aside, global hype has put a new spotlight on Khmer filmmaking due to the potent use of supernatural horror. In the age of Conjuring spinoffs, an injection of the new is more than welcome.

When and where:

 5th July (9:45PM) @ Luna Leederville

5.  Stubbornly Here

Did you see Fremont? In the same vein, at first look, comes Stubbornly Here, a black-and-white coming-of-age written and directed by Perth's very own Tyler Broadley about three restless youths. The director's cited Jean-Luc Godard, Agnes Varda, and Richard Linklater as major inspirations. That's more than enough for me. This film is looks to be a step away from the typically vague "true blue narrative" and more toward something uniquely modern. I'm very excited for Stubbornly Here, and think you should be too. Check out the trailer here!

When and where:

4th July (9:00PM) & 13th July (6:15PM) @ Luna Leederville

Make sure to get down to any Luna Cinemas to support the festival and those running it!
