Fringe Review: The Too Late Show
On a windy Friday night last week, I was given a glimpse into the future of Talk show TV, a time when the Television industry is in collapse, and Rose, the host of Rose (Live), is trying to pull together a dying industry. Rose provides an array of standup comedy, live magic and secret celebrity guest appearances!! A secret for myself to keep, and for you to find out Let’s just say it involves a questionable boogie board…..
On the 2nd of February, I experienced the variety lineup of Elijah and Neil from House of BOK, Drag artist Boyname and most importantly Rose herself (!!) perform the best standup the 6000 has ever witnessed.
Being a Perth native, I appreciated the meta Perth Humour of The Too Late Show, with one of my favourite quotes being “From Byford to Bibra Lake, and Coogee to Clarkson”, one of many Perth and 2000’s millennial references.
Another quality I loved about the show was its multifaceted nature. Through a mix of personal life references, references to older shows like ‘Deal or No Deal’ and Rove, famous personal friends calling in on the show and lastly the slow decay of the quality of the show.
My favourite act of the night was without a doubt, Boyname. With a performance that technically started from the start of the show, an elephant in the room, if you will, blossoms up into an erotic and controversial drag performance.
I give 3.5 stars out of 5 to The Too Late Show, perhaps our final hope in late-night television.
