PREVIEW: Chess the Musical
Calling all musical theatre buffs and ABBA fanatics! Pencil in early June into your calendars for StoreyBoard Entertainment’s production of Chess the Musical.
Set in the 1980s during the period of the Cold War, the musical revolves around the superpower rivalry between Soviet Russia and the United States in the form of a politically centered chess match. Chess is a production that critiques the political climate of the 1980s Cold War. The production follows Grandmasters Anatoly Sergievsky (USSR) and Freddie Trumper (USA) as they find themselves entangled in a love triangle with Florence Vassey, Trumper’s presumed lover. This musical powerfully paints a picture that like chess, the Cold War was a devious game.
With music written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA and a book written by Tim Rice, who wrote for Disney’s Aladdin and the Lion King. The upcoming production also features a stellar cast with major Australian names such as Logie nominee and former X-Factor Australia judge, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Australian Idol finalist, Robert Mills.
The production is also being backed by orchestral performances from the Perth Symphony Orchestra. Like other performances of Chess across the globe, this musical will be set with a concert-like feel at the Perth Concert Hall for only three days, a musical experience you don’t want to miss out on!
