LIVE REVIEW: G Flip @ The Sewing Room

You know when you catch something right before it’s cool? The thing that you tell your mates about and they ignore you, but then come back telling you about it later as if you weren’t the one that introduced it to them in the first place? G Flip’s gig at The Sewing Room was the physical embodiment of that feeling.

G Flip (Georgia Flipo) first made herself known through triple j Unearthed, blowing up with her first track ‘About You’. A song that personifies her trusty drum kit one that caught the hearts of thousands — one that launched her onto the SXSW stage in June. Following her adventures in the United States, she had to of course set off on her first Australian tour.

I arrived at 8:30pm just on time to watch percussion duo Feels take the stage as the supporting act. This wasn’t my first time watching Feels perform but there is something about two friends vibing off each other that is incredibly mesmerising to watch.

Feels offered a unique blend of EDM and percussion, to create something you could dance to in a club but also read a book to with a cup of tea. Filling the room with groovy bouncy drum and bass sounds, Feels warmed up the stage for the highly anticipated G Flip.

“One minute!” I heard an excited fan say to his friends at 9:29pm. In a black quokka tee and skinny jeans, G Flip hopped onto the stage with charisma, effortlessly drumming and singing. The whole night she jumped between drums, bass, guitar and vocals, which showed off her multi-talents.

A very self-aware G Flip made jokes about how she only had two songs and that the public is taking a huge risk buying a ticket to see her. Her set was filled with unreleased tracks such as ‘Real Life’ and ‘Drink Too Much’, though the crowd wasn’t familiar with these songs it didn’t stop people from having a dance.

As a romantic gesture, G Flip started an Instagram Live video mid-way through the gig to sing happy birthday to her girlfriend Gemma. When she asked the crowd to join along, not a soul hesitated to start. What a heart-warming addition to a breezy spring night.

The gorgeous G Flip wrapped up her set with her banger ‘About You’. If you just sat in for the last song you wouldn’t expect this calibre of stage presence and crowd reaction from someone with only two releases. Once she wrapped up her set, people flooded straight to the merchandise table.

In honesty, I couldn’t ask for a better way to spend my Saturday night — supporting local arts and discovering a talented gem called G Flip.
