2018 Spanish Film Festival Preview

2018 Spanish Film Festival Preview

In case you're unaware, the 2018 Spanish Film Festival has just begun! It will run exclusively at Cinema Paradiso until Wednesday May 16, showcasing some of Spain's finest comedies and dramas and the like.

Just speaking as someone who's picked a random couple of films to watch during a Spanish Film Festival, you're sure to at least see one and a half good movies. You can't tell me those odds aren't great.

Anyway, we had a brief back and forth with Paulette Arvizu, the spokesperson for this year's Spanish Film Festival. Curious about the selection? We asked Paulette to recommend three flicks, so we'll start (and end) with those.

It's For Your Own Good (Comedy)

It's For Your Own Good is a smash hit screwball comedy following the misadventures of three overprotective dads as they join forces to ruin their daughters' future with three lousy boyfriends. Their daughters are interested in three particularly irksome suitors: an anti-establishment activist, a playboy photographer, and a slacker. A sly satirisation of male insecurities and a fresh family comedy all in one.

Mist & The Maiden (Thriller)

Interested in what Spanish noir looks like? Look no further than Mist & The Maiden. An old murder case that took place in one of Spain's Canary Islands is reopened, with the evidence pointing to a politician. But the detectives investigating the case must also contend with the secrets and lies of the island's inhabitants. This gripping thriller is based on a best-selling crime novel.

Pan's Labyrinth (Fantasy)

Yup, this one. One of the most beloved dark fantasy films of all time. Written and directed by visionary filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro, Pan's Labyrinth follows a bookish young girl seeking refuge from the all too real terror of WWII. She discovers an odd but captivating other world full of strange creatures, both benevolent and malevolent.
