This Show Does Not Include Live Nude Girls
IntotheMask Theatre are Perth’s sole proponent of Commedia dell’Arte and have been since their inception in 2010. If you are like me, you might at first be affronted by such a foreign term (Not in a xenophobic way, rather the jarring sense of ignorance). It is indeed fortunate then that their founder, Alethea Bevilacqua is not just a highly talented performer, and artist, but an equally apt educator. Since its beginnings IntotheMask has been just as much about teaching others how to join in and experience the under-appreciated world of Commedia dell’Arte as it is bringing performances to the appreciative crowds.
A theatre tradition that far outdates the European colonisation of Australia, it involves the use of masks and relies more on the performers borrowing then it does the creation of originality in their characters. Alee fell in love when she studied the style and went over to Europe to soak in as much as she could. And did she ever, she studied under some of Europe’s most respected practitioners. And now, as one of best trained in commedia dell'arte in Australia, we of Perth are set for a real Fringe treat. This performance offers a real chance to experience a cultural form that is wholly unexplored for those in Perth.
Don't worry, this show will be anything but antiquated. IntotheMask aren’t content with just bringing this tradition to Perth, they are seeking to form a unique version of it on the shores of the swan. This show does just that by bringing in everyone’s favourite form of theatre, improvisation . For a style that is already full of fun, commedia dell’arte and improvisation are a match made in heaven. The show will also feature live music from Michael Biagioni. This show is also the first time that Shane McMullan will be taking the reins of an IntotheMask show and Alee informs me that he’s revelling in the role.
Taking more of a back seat has also been an illuminating process for her, and she hopes that it proves to be just as insightful for her production team and cast who have taken up a bigger load. If you are free this weekend or next week, make sure you don’t miss this truly unique fringe show that is bound to leave audiences with lasting memories.
