Here we bring all of the news regarding events as a part of this year's Perth International Art Festival; Be it upcoming previews, event reviews and general good stuff.
Everybody loves to laugh. Live comedy id one of my absolute favourite things so I decided that I would spend most of my time trying to make myself laugh until my brains fell out. I spent the opening night at Fringe in the DeLuxe tent and it was an interesting and eclectic lineup, and if last night was anything to go by, Fringe this year is going to be a good one!
The blend of songs that the band dished up was perfect. Their longer progressive pieces kept the stoners happy, whilst there was enough heavy numbers to get the moshpit well and truly pumping.
From start to finish I had a smile on my face, clever historical jokes from the era opened the performance and an upbeat and catchy duet sung by the couple showed the audience what they were in for.
After some severely tardy article production from this writer, part 6 of the 100 Modern Classic Albums is finally here! As we move into the second half of the list, things start getting seriously interesting. Would any of these albums make your top 10 modern classics?
Hugely morally ambivalent and carefree, The Wolf of Wall Street is a lighthearted trip through a world, through the eyes and the life of a man who really does not give a fuck about anyone or anything outside his own desires. A lighthearted trip through a fairly dark space.
On the last date of their Polymorphism Tour, Karnivool produced a perfect performance, shadowing both of the openers' sets, leaving a collective grin across the face of the crowd.
This year’s Fringe Festival is the most ambitious to date; With over 200 acts performing over the 4 weeks beginning with tonight’s VIP launch, as well as expanding into the Swan region with Midlandia (so much class with the extra ‘i’) nobody could argue with that.
Homelessness in Perth exists and it is confronting. There were rich stories and insights into what happens in the underbelly of our city. I heard of prostitution, drug creation and seeking jail as a place of desire. It was difficult for me to listen to sheer disrespect of the law.
Regardless of drunk tourists talking in front of me the whole show, I had an inexplicably amazing experience watching a band I can only describe as effortlessly enchanting, with a dirty grunge appeal. A band I will see again and a band I will recommend to all my friends and anyone reading this. Kudos to Half Moon Run.
I'll be playing a bunch of new tracks plus some old favourites. The live show has come a long way since I last played in Perth and I'm just excited to get in front of everyone again. Plus the Bakery is a really cool venue and it'd be good to chill there again and have some drinks
It’s post-rock, experimental, synthy and has an undeniable pop element to it. This Brisbane three piece have seemingly struck a winning formula early on their debut EP Salvage.
POND, as a live animal, give a lot to the audience. When frontman Nick Allbrook isn’t wide-armed screaming to the crowd he is throwing himself around, writhing on the floor in the sweat dripping from his oh-so-Fremantle flanno.
The Growlers' Gilded Pleasures is a great EP, however given the current popularity of nostalgia soaked rock on first listen it can lack a certain punch. However, Gilded Pleasures' opener 'Dogheart II' will drag you in, and the EP constantly rewards on subsequent listenings, before heading into high rotation on your playlist.
They are playing this Thursday at Fly by Night in Freo; undoubtedly a band you will be able to tell your kids you saw “before they were cool”.
It’s the beginning of the New Year, and you know what that means for us Down Underners (yeah, you heard me. It’ll catch on, mark my words): It’s going to be hot. Like, sweltering, dead-bats-raining hot. Thankfully, it also means one other thing: Movies.
Perth’s finest prog-rock technicians will be playing at one of the most amazing if not surreal locations on the 23rd day of this sweltering month.
Abandoned buildings don’t need to be cool. We recently ventured down to the Elizabethan village in Armadale. A once bustling tourist attraction, it is now a fenced residential estate consisting of houses of the Elizabethan fashion, to some extent.
I’ve often thought that forcing people to travel, organise and commit to see music would mean only the true music lovers (and those rare apt dickheads) would bother to make it out; Southbound Festival 2014 reaffirmed this belief.
