One of the most powerful aspects of the Festival is the exposure that young kids, particularly young girls, get to a mélange of musicianship in which women are so powerfully present and heard. The access and variety to live music for the underage bracket seems to be lacking in Perth – and as much as I may begrudgingly grumble about feeling 15 years too old for the Backlot these days – the importance of Fairbridge in holding this space cannot be understated. I must admit that I got choked up as Geneve launched into a song on the representation of women in the music scene. As a kid of Fairbridge herself, she was equally stirred seeing the women get up onstage and bare their art. It feels so beautifully cyclic that she may then be that inspiring figure to someone else.
We caught up with David Stewart of the young folk-rock Perth band Belgrade in the latest edition of our Pop Vulture series.
Fairbridge Festival is a symbiotic cacophony of world/folk/blues/roots/dance/country and every sound in between... and it is less than two weeks away!
Disconnect Festival will be taking over the good village of Fairbridge for another year after a successful inaugural event last year, with some pretty big names booked this time around. Check out this year's lineup and details here!
Fairbridge Festival really is a unique event. So, we teamed up with Fairbridge's social media runner to get y'all prepped!
I saw about 25 different acts over the two days and three nights and I have 19 names here on my list that I want to tell you about. Obviously I can’t tell you heaps about all of them because otherwise I would be here for about 6 years. I will go into detail about 8 of my tops picks, and I’ll briefly mention the rest. Okay? Good. Let’s do this!
I often like to say that Fairbridge is one of the only festivals where you can ask the audience to sing, and they do it in tune- with harmonies as well if you ask nicely. I have never experienced anything like the community of people that is this festival. Everyone you meet is kind, interesting and a true music lover.
If you're looking for some new music and you're sick of the mundane- you need to check out Fremantle based songwriter David Hyams, on his brand new album 'Travelling Bones'.
There were so many other bands I could have mentioned but these to me were the stand outs, the ones that made me want to dance and sing, and made me feel happy to be at Fairbridge.
There’s something about thousands of people who love music and a good time crammed into a tiny eco-village near where I used to grow up that just speaks to the inner hippie in everyone.
