In just her second show as Julia Wallace and first with a backing band, Julia Wallace proved why she is already a world class talent, blowing away the Barbes crowd at the launch of her debut EP, Place in Mind, on the night of 8 April.
We dwell for a moment on what it means to come from Albany and I mention the attempts of the local Famers Market to lay claim to her success. “Why not?” she chuckles. ”I think that’s why I sing so loud is because I had to project”. It makes sense that most Farmer’s Markets don’t come equipped with a fully-fledged PA System and fold back, Carla continues reminiscing, “That was such a great place to play – everyone would give me veggies in my guitar case”.
From getting down to the nitty and gritty of the creative process, to discussing the Perth music scene and their favourite live venues, the four boys gave us a gleaming insight into their journey thus far as a band.

POW! Negro are one of the most exciting young bands on the Perth scene right now. Their eagerly anticipated debut EP Jasmine & Licorice will be dropped on July 28, and the boys are heading on a short tour to launch it, with dates in Bunbury, Dunsborough and Perth. We were very lucky to talk to frontman/MC Nelson Mondlane and bassist Toby Batchelor ahead of the release, in another segment of our Pop Vulture series.
