FRINGE REVIEW: Tony Galati the Musical is spud-tacular

Tony Galati the Musical has returned to Fringe World Festival after a string of sold-out shows last year, and you’d be daft to be missing out on it!

Written by Dan Debuf, the original musical is a beautiful ode to the Western Australian urban legend himself. Whether you know him for his bushy brows or state-conquering Spudshed empire, Tony Galati is a household name – but one whose story often lies unexplored. Told via an electrifying cast starring Thomas Papathanassiou in the title role, this is a theatrical narrative for all.

As a promising farmer keen to carry on his father’s legacy, we are introduced to Tony and his family’s origins – as well as their central motivation: to grow healthy, affordable food for WA’s working families. This, however, is not without its struggles as the Galati family faces the wrath of regulatory government bodies. More specifically, such as that of the looming WA Potato Marketing Corporation.

Tenacity is on the cards for our iconic blue singlet-clad Perthonality, who finds it within himself to stand up to the authorities and fight for his humble vision. With main references to his legal fight against the state government, capitalism is shunned and Perth is exemplified as a grower’s paradise. Through his battle with his internal (and external) conflict, the audience is treated to a live band led by music director Joshua Haines, spunky choreography, nostalgic trips, Perth-specific cliches and yes, even a singing potato.

Regardless, the hilarity that unfolds is due to the wonderful writing of the play itself, mirrored through equally flawless execution. Each actor’s vocal abilities remain mesmerizing, despite all the movement and dancing involved. Working hand in hand, the gifted cast delivers a one-of-a-kind Fringe experience as a wonderful tribute to our little city.

In fact, anyone who lives in Western Australia should certainly head along to enjoy this hour-long musical special, for it sheds light on the inspirational narrative behind the spud king. Whether you’re from Busselton or Joondalup (or dare I say it, Cockburn), prepare to have things getting up close and personal.

So come have your hearts warmed and your toes left tapping… After all, it all starts with taking a chance – and as Galati best puts it, recognising the beauty in an imperfect spud.
