Mash Brewery - Swan Valley
Set in the outskirts of the Swan Valley wine region, this place is a beer lover's dream. With a comprehensive range of in-house brewed beverages, from a light and floral pale ale, through to the most bitter beer I have ever had, the 500; along with a small selection of ciders and locally sourced wines, there is something for everyone.
The kitchen was great too, we all ordered a couple of different dishes, and not a thing was sent back. The steak burger was tender, the beer (of course) battered snapper was mouthwatering, and the salt and pepper squid was perfectly seasoned and quite obviously fresh.
But good pub food isn't why we are here. Beers.
The 500, though it proved unpopular with some in our crowd, I thought, was delicious. With a 9.8% alcohol content, it only comes in a small glass; a small glass packed with bitterness, and a great aftertaste of honey. It was similar to an Amber Ale or something, but intense.
A special batch available that day was a Belgian Blonde Ale, aptly named Tank 8, was a great, heavy tasting hoppy beer, although not overly strong, it had something about it, something which said, "have more..."
The apple cider was exactly as described. Not a sweet cider (for that, get the pear cider), it was quite dry, and was very refreshing. Brewed with locally grown apples, it had a great flavour without being overpowering and sweet, as some ciders do.
Lastly, the Koffee Stout. I was excited to try this beer-creation. Described as having hints of cocoa and coffee, this beer looks like an espresso. It's very much black, with a small amount of froth around the top, almost like crema. It basically smells like coffee too, but when it goes into your mouth, your taste buds dance an awkward confused jig. It was the most polarising drink of the day, people either loved it or hated it. So, be curious.
This place has a great vibe, great service and deliciously crafted beers and cider. For extra points, there is Supa-Golf/Mini Putt next door..
