I have seen more artists live than I can count... And of the lot, I think it’s safe to say that Explosions in the Sky just became the best to date.
We got the chance to interview the one-and-only Explosions in the Sky ahead of their February 16 show at the Perth International Arts Festival. Our discussion covered their latest album (2016's The Wilderness), the highlights of their career and much more, read all about it here!
Current leaders in Perth’s emerging punk x grunge hybrids, the trio are taking all of the right steps to ensure their music remains true, firstly by releasing an absolute banger of a debut in 2013’s Maybelene, before starting their own label and release platform, Blackbox Recordings and releasing the Flight Test EP.
Regardless of drunk tourists talking in front of me the whole show, I had an inexplicably amazing experience watching a band I can only describe as effortlessly enchanting, with a dirty grunge appeal. A band I will see again and a band I will recommend to all my friends and anyone reading this. Kudos to Half Moon Run.
The Love Junkies are a Perth (Thornlie methinks?) based post-grunge three piece who hit hard, and rock equally as hard as some kind of Children Collide x Queens Of The Stone Age x Scratch Acid (melody, groove and freak outs respectively) hybrid sexy dangerous animal.
Parking Lots is an important album, at least as far as Perth music is concerned, precisely because it inspires thought bubbles in those listening to it. Listening to Ermine Coat's second LP, the recently released Parking Lots, may be to feel a mental illness that results in a physical illness.
To put this into perspective, the best metaphor I can express for hearing Stetson play is that the listener is on a ship searching for land in choppy sea, in the dark of night.
There's enough to satisfy Wavves' fans with the expected falsetto "oooh's", the grungy lo-fi post-rock sound that forms around the melancholic yet sometimes dark vocals.
With often the ultimate blend of guiding bass, soothing guitar melodies and spacey drums, combined with that reverbed voice of beauty, this is probably going to sneak into being one of my favourite releases of the year so far.
'Clash The Truth' is a step forward for Beach Fossils and some of the stuff in this album will have you licking your dry-grandma lips for a release where take this sound to the next level.
Considering the band only formed in 2012 they sound remarkably in sync with one another, forming a very full and accomplished sound. I had to keep reminding myself throughout listening to the album that it is in fact their debut record.
Q: What does a kazoo, a mariachi band, a set of bagpipes and three hirsute Scotsmen have in common?
A: They all appear on the new Biffy Clyro double record, “Opposites”
Palma Violets have only been kicking around for a couple of years, and the London quartet’s first release, 180, is definitely one worth hearing. The band have seemingly meshed grungy, washed out guitar, punk-style drums, plodding surf bass, 80’s post-punk vocals and both modern and classic keyboard to create an aural experiment that has paid off!
