INTERVIEW: Introducing Lauran Hibberd, emerging artist from Isle of Wight

Lauran Hibberd, hailing from the Isle of Wight, is an emerging singer-songwriter who just released a single called ‘Frankie’s Girlfriend’ off her upcoming debut album Everything Is Dogs that will be released on September 20th.

In this quick Q&A, we discussed a range of topics including her new music, favourite artists, and more.

You've played at the Great Escape and most recently, Glastonbury Festival, which are both prestigious events! What was something you experienced there that stood out to you that was important?

I think it was more the feeling of playing for me, I felt really lucky to be there and mainly just tried to soak it all up. It felt like a really great pay off to a lot of hard work. Glastonbury Festival was a huge thing on the bucket list ticked off for me. It was really surreal. Huw Stephens at Radio 1 introduced my performance too, which was just amazing.

Your new single ‘Frankie’s Girlfriend’ showcases your skills in telling a story within your music. Was there any real life experience that was an inspiration for you writing that song?

Yes! The track was based on a real life scenario. It started with me having a ropey dream about a friend of mine called ‘Frankie', I told him about it the next day jokingly and his girlfriend went crazy – despite the fact we were just pals. Needless to say, it didn’t work out for them.

It was just announced that your debut EP Everything is Dogs is releasing on September 20th. Who did you work with and how was the experience finishing your first EP?

Yes! It feels amazing to have wrapped up my debut EP, after just releasing singles until now – it will be so good to hold a body of work. I worked on the EP with my trustee producers Jim and Rob Homes AKA Boe Weaver here on the Isle of Wight at Studio Humbug. I have recorded with them ever since I can remember, they have really helped to shape and influence me.

Being from England, who has had their fair share of talented musicians, is there anyone in particular that you looked up to growing up that you envisioned yourself to become how you are now?

Growing up, I was always a huge fan of Weezer, Arctic Monkeys, et cetera but ever since I was 13, I always dreamt of being like Avril Lavigne – she rocked my teenage world.

Are there any musicians that you are currently listening to at the moment that you enjoy?

Yeah! I’m hugely into Julia Jacklin, Hockey Dad and John Eatherly.

Lastly, which musicians you would be most excited and thrilled to be collaborating with on a song?

Phoebe Bridgers! I would love to hang out with her and write a song, she is unbelievably good. I’m excited to play Mirrors Festival with her in November in London. I think we’d come up with something kind of heartbreaking!
