LIVE REVIEW: CLIENT LIAISON KICK OFF THEIR FOREIGN AFFAIR WORLD TOUR

Immediately after a stunning Splendour performance with Tina Arena, Client Liaison have embarked on a world tour with, first stop Fremantle! The gig was originally scheduled to be held at Noodle Palace, but after a rather interesting political argument it was moved to Metropolis Fremantle which far exceeded my expectations as a venue.

Sydney based, Muki opened the show, and while I only caught half of her set, I was impressed by her potential. The originals I did hear could be likened to Grimes or Charli XCX. Following Muki was Melbourne funker Total Giovanni, who prepared the growing audience with some 70s and 80s inspired tuneage.

Before I move into the nitty gritty of CL, did we ever stop to question why Australian millennials are enamoured by the rebirth of this lowbrow 80s culture? Client Liaison have been at the forefront of this revival. Their recipe for fetchy success is simple - they take 80s synth beats, brilliantly outlandish outfits, and toss in some falsetto vocals for good measure. Their enduring eclecticism materialises in their outlandish stage performances, and Saturday night's was no exception. Their sets are quintessentially cringe, equipped with costume changes, watercoolers, dancers and lots of bling. That was that the 80s was all about - simple, outrageously evocative entertainment. Perhaps this is what music from the decades following has been lacking. Thankfully, Client Liaison has ignited a certain fascination with 80s nostalgia, notwithstanding the fact that many of their fans were not alive during the decade.

The band played songs from from Diplomatic Immunity which amalgamated a hugely diverse range of musical styles and visual aesthetics. There were your classic synth-focussed tunes as well as a few more 90s house beats. The use of Australiana-driven samples such as the kookaburra laughing on Canberra Won’t Be Calling Tonight gracefully added depth to their palette toward the end of the set. Another stand out from the medley set was A Foreign Affair which was performed with opener Muki.

The band's singer, Monte Morgan is a natural groover which assists the band in presenting a multi-sensory experience. The props, the lighting and the costumes add to a conceptual theatre-like production. Their stage presence goes beyond impressive and translates into a genuine charisma. Their live performance brought to light an undeniably distinctive aesthetic which appeals to so many. Client Liaison is in some ways, a  way of life, and a manner of living you have not experienced until you have seen their Australiana infused, 80s fuelled dance party.
