The Song Was Wrong: A Love Story About Hope, Heartbreak and Music

Perth Theatre Company’s Artistic Director Melissa Cantwell writes and directs the third installment of the 2015 Perth Theatre Company Season, The Song Was Wrong. An epic love story spanning three generations, The Song Was Wrong is a tale of hope, memory, and redemption, utilising an evocative and original score by Nick Wales (Sydney Dance Company, Sarah Blasko), and transforming the Studio Underground into a rich and layered world designed by Bruce McKinven (Company B Belvoir, Bell Shakespeare, Queensland Theatre Company).

The Song was Wrong is a highly visual and physical work. Telling the story of a Pianist and the woman he loved and lost, their instant attraction and passionate love affair, the characters they met, the decisions they made and how their lives are entwined forever. Exploring love, art and the relationship between a musician and his muse, The Song Was Wrong is an original work written by Perth Theatre Company’s Artistic Director Melissa Cantwell. Teaming with Aurelio Costarella, one of Australia’s most respected fashion designers, together with some of WA’s best artists, Perth Theatre Company’s The Song Was Wrong spins a tale that will seduce even the hardest of hearts.

Melissa Cantwell says, “The Song was Wrong was inspired by a story I was told many years ago in a piano bar in Saigon. It was the story of a pianist who fell deeply in love with a French woman during the occupation of Vietnam. It's creatively energising to be writing and directing a new piece, and incredibly inspiring to be working with such a fine ensemble of artists on a deeply human story of love and loss.”

The Song was Wrong stars WAAPA graduates Felix Joseps and Astrid Grant (direct from working in France with world-renownd artist Ariane Mnouchkine of Le Théâtre du Soleil) as well as one of Perth’s most exciting emerging dancer/performers Jacinta Larcombe. The stellar cast also include George Shetsov, Sarah Nelson and Thomas Papathanassiou.
