From House of Cards to Bojack Horseman: Here are the best web exclusive shows of 2016

Gone are the days where cable TV was needed to enjoy the best shows in the world. Nowadays, some of the most critically acclaimed shows are strictly available on platforms like Hulu and Netflix. It's amazing how much technology has changed, but it's something that every single person has to deal with. Unfortunately, if you don't want to get Netflix or Hulu, you end up missing out on some spectacular shows:

The Man in the High Castle

If the title The Main in the High Castle rings a bell, it's because it was a novel released in the 1960s. This TV series is loosely based on that particular novel. War fans will eat this series up because the story revolves around an alternative history in which the Axis Powers won World War II. The United States is split up into a Japanese puppet state, a Nazi puppet state and a neutral zone.

If war is not your cup a tea, then there is no reason to watch this series. The Man in the High Castle does a beautiful job of presenting a post-WWII dystopia. Most of the characters in this show have excellent development and that enhances the plot greatly. Due to the fact that this is a war series, lots of frightening experiences are existent. The only downside to The Main in the High Castle is there a few points that drag on longer than they should. It doesn't ruin the brilliance of the show, however.

11.22.63

Yet another show that is based on an infamous novel is 11.22.63. The story is much like the Back to the Future trilogy in which a man travels back in time. However, unlike Marty and Doc, the man that travels back in time has a completely different motive. His goal is to try and stop the assassination of John F. Kennedy (JFK). In doing so, he has to first understand how JFK is going to be assassinated. It's quite an invigorating, yet absurd story!

11.22.63 is a show that is made entertaining by its unusual and entertaining plot. However, there are times where the execution is a bit shaky. It's not necessarily unbearable, but there are times where the show feels very outdated. With that being said, the overall mood-setting of the show is done tremendously. You get a real sense of desperation for the main character to stop one of the most infamous assassinations in US history. Overall, the series of events that take place in 11.22.63 will keep you on your toes. Sometimes that's really all you can ask for.

BoJack Horseman

Taking a break from action and war, BoJack Horseman is an animated sitcom that brings a long lost character back from the dead. The main character, BoJack Horseman, was also the main character of the 1987 sitcom Horsin' Around. Much like all sitcoms, the plots of each episode are situational. The main premise of the show, though, is watching BoJack struggle with his everyday life. He has an on-again-off-again girlfriend, a freeloading roommate and a friend who also happens to be his enemy.

While season one of BoJack Horseman was simply decent, season two is where it picked up in a big way. Everything in season two was done better. To be honest, the first season felt like the developers were cashing it in. None of the jokes were very funny and the characters were hard to enjoy. Again, that all changed with season two. It might even be a good idea to just skip the first season!

Daredevil

Daredevil is one of the premier shows available on Netflix, and for good reason. It's set in the Marvel universe and it's based on the Marvel character Daredevil. As a child, Matt Murdock (Daredevil) was blinded. This left a terrible imprint on his life. As an adult, Murdock is a brilliant lawyer by day and then acts as Daredevil at night. Much like other superheroes, Daredevil spends his nights pulverizing criminals to a bloody pulp to ensure the streets of New York City remain safe.

Daredevil has received worldwide critical acclaim. All of the action in the show is done to near perfection and it really gives it that added edge of brilliance. The show also does a really good job of staying true to the source material, something other superhero movies have failed to do. If I had to recommend one TV over all others, it would be Daredevil. If you want to take my recommendation, then make sure you have access to the show on Netflix. There may be a chance this show isn't available in your country. If so, there is still a way to watch it on Netflix as Secure Thoughts describes downloading a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to change your IP address and bypass any geo-restrictions.

 House of Cards

Once again we have a show that is based on an old novel. This time, it is House of Cards and outside of Daredevil, it's the best of the bunch. The main premise of House of Cards is dealing with the themes of power, manipulation and pragmatism. It is set in present day Washington D.C. and deals with all of the people in the head office.

The one who steals the show in House of Cards is undoubtedly Kevin Spacey. Even though other members of the cast do a great job, Spacey puts on a one-man show. With a performance as good as his, it becomes shocking to remember that this is a web exclusive show. Outside of the brilliance of Spacey, though, the show does a perfect job of storytelling. If Daredevil ceased to exist, then House of Cards would be the very best web exclusive show of 2016.

Don't spend another day missing out on all of these epic shows. Whatever is needed to be done to access Netflix or Hulu, you won’t regret it. Are there any other noteworthy shows that I missed for 2016? Have you been enjoying all of these shows so far? We would love to know your thoughts, so please leave a comment below.
