Perth based hip-hop group Otiuh drop their latest single, ‘Simple’

Otiuh consistently combines witty bars with propulsive, vibrant productions, making them one of Perth’s most vital hip-hop groups.

Their live performances are a ton of fun, too. Their stage presence at Jack Rabbit Slims a couple of years back brought heat and energy to a freezing cold night. Naturally, that same sunny vibrancy is evident in their newest single, ‘Simple’, an upbeat banger sure to get even the more frigid among us moving. There’s a few different sonic textures to ‘Simple’ but the smooth-as-butter flow keeps it like its namesake--in the best way!

To celebrate the release of the single, we asked Otiuh some questions:

IN: How did Simple come together?
Otiuh:
It came together over nearly a year-long period. Jahmeil wrote the concept verse and chorus over more of an electronic beat originally. I decided to reproduce the track and dive a little deeper into funk land, layering a lot of different sounds and working closely with JCAL to piece this together.

Hip-hop is one of the most diverse genres. How would you describe your style of hip-hop?

Textural and playful. We love some pretty kooky sounds production wise. We try to say what’s on our mind and not take ourselves too seriously. Sometimes we just say things because they sound cool. Not everything has to mean something. But sometimes something can mean everything?

Who are the biggest influences on your music?

Too many to list….Run DMC, Outkast, A Tribe Called Quest from the old school. Childish Gambino, Injury Reserve, Brockhampton and Goldlink from the new school.

Who are your favourite WA artists right now?

Drea, Cruz Patterson, Mali Jo$e, Adrian Dzvuke. They’re just all super genuine and unafraid to double down on their own sound.

What's next for Otiuh?

More sounds, more visuals, more bops. Maybe a live show before the year is out!
