"The Story of Souleymane" anchors the Alliance Française French Film Festival 2025 season

L’Histoire Du Souleymane (The Story of Souleymane) is a story of intensely contemporary concerns, revealing the felt but little understood understood reality of immigration. Following the story of an everyman refugee caught in bureaucratic limbo while waiting for permission to work, the film explores the imperfect reality of asylum seekers who lack the financial backing required to wait without working for a VISA in France. Getting a spot at a homeless shelter, exploitation by those with the means, and doubt whether they’ve got enough trauma, the story covers a diverse array of challenges faced by asylum-seekers. Souleymane, formidably played by non-professional actor Abou Sangare, moves through triumph and tragedy with the good humour and grief of a survivor who’s been fighting for a long time. The frenetic breathlessness makes for a mad scramble of a film, an electric run of a film that swallows you whole.

L'Histoire Du Solomon is essential viewing for those interested in current affairs, and also marks the upcoming launch of the 2025 Alliance Française French Film Festival, running from the 13th of March to the 16th of April.
