2023 Spanish Film Festival: 4 Films You Can't Miss

The HSBC Spanish Film Festival presented by Palace, an annual celebration of film and culture from Spain and Latin America, will screen at Palace Cinemas, Luna Palace Cinemas and Palace Nova Cinemas from June 15th to July 5th.

The 25th anniversary of the Spanish Film Festival in Perth brings over 30 films to pick from between the 3 locations- so we’ve picked four to dig your teeth into before you explore the rest.

Prison 77

Based on true events- Prison 77 is a hard-hitting drama focused on the prisoners in Spain during Spain’s transition to democracy in 1976/77. Manuel (Miguel Herrán from Money Heist fame) becomes a reluctant leader in a prisoner’s group trying to change the prison systems from the inside. Powerful performances and cinematography accompany the historical background of this dark thriller.

Two Many Chefs

Beginning with a showing at the Guggenheim in Bilbao before becoming a bona fide box office hit across Spain, Two Many Chefs takes a Michelin-starred kitchen and adds in a few sprinkles of family drama and comedy to create an even greater final dish. Starring Enrique Auqer and Karra Elejalde.

The Kings of the World

The Spanish Film Festival is also showcasing the best in Latin American cinema from the past year, with The Kings of the World from Colombia being a highlight. Five teenagers struggle to find a new home after leaving the streets of Medellin, and follows their incredible journey to start afresh.

Carmen

One of the greatest dance films ever made, Carmen is returning with a 40th Anniversary special edition to Perth screens on closing night at Luna Leederville. Celebrate love and Flamenco with a complimentary drink and flamenco performance before the film.
