FRINGE REVIEW: Lisa Woodbrook’s “It’s Not Me, It’s Definitely You” is exceptional in every way

As we descended the steps into the slick venue that was Downstairs At The Maj (under His Majesty’s Theatre), excitement and anticipation was in the air. I realised that I hadn’t formed any preconceptions as to what Lisa Woodbrook’s It’s Not Me, It’s Definitely You would be like, as we sorted ourselves out with snacks and got comfortable before the show. But even if I’d gone in with high expectations, I can assure you that my parting impression would have been the exact same. From start to finish, I was absolutely blown away.

During It’s Not Me, It’s Definitely You, Woodbrook takes us through her previous dating traumas through songs of Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse, with razor-sharp comedy in between. I still can’t decide whether I preferred her musical or comedic performance – both were done with absolute confidence, refined talent and the perfect level of humour, with this stellar combination never faltering for even a second. Yes, the topic is a little cliché, but Woodbrook is a natural storyteller and makes it interesting, engaging and fun.

Some highlights included her rendition of Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back to Black’ and Lily Allen’s ‘Smile’. If I dare say, her covers were almost better than the originals – everyone in the room was truly captivated by her infectious energy and passion. She navigated the twists and turns of these iconic artists’ music with ease, and it was clear that she’d mastered and finessed her chest voice to perfection. Accompanied by pianist Joshua James Webb, their synchrony was flawless.

Honestly, I can say with complete confidence that there was just nothing to fault in Woodbrook’s sharp-witted, lively performance. An hour just wasn’t enough, and we left with our hearts full and minds blown. Woodbrook was truly born to be a performer, and It’s Not Me, It’s Definitely You is a one-of-a-kind experience that you won’t easily forget.
