LIVE REVIEW: An ethereal evening with Cub Sport @ Metropolis Fremantle

Excitement was in the air and expectations were high as Metropolis Fremantle promised a breathtaking show on Thursday night. Two People eased us into the evening with their fearless yet fragile sound which resonated well with the growing audience.

The next support was Wafia, who seemed to share a similar fan-base as Cub Sport, as the crowd enjoyed singing along to many of her songs including popular hits such as ‘Better Not’ and her triple j hottest 100 single ‘I’m Good’. A tasteful cover of Frank Ocean’s ‘Lost’ also went down a treat! Her presence and grace on stage were notable and made for the perfect lead up to an incredible performance by the one and only Cub Sport.

True to character, lead singer Tim Nelson entered the stage wearing all-white. You could practically hear a pin drop as he began the set with ‘Unwinding Myself’, the intro to Cub Sport’s latest album, the self-entitled Cub Sport. With this angelically simplistic introduction, the rest of the band joined Tim on stage. Tim’s vocals undoubtedly sound even more amazing live, with the entire band giving off an air of happiness and gratitude that was reflected by the audience.

The dazzling pink and purple lighting of the stage complemented the heavenly vibes of Cub Sport’s music, as songs from their new album were brought to life. The crowd went off for ‘Sometimes’ and their collaborative track with Mallrat titled ‘Video’. However, the true highlights were ‘As Long As You’re Happy’ and ‘Party Pill’, purely because of the raw emotion newlyweds Tim and keyboardist Sam Netterfield poured into the performance.

Throwbacks to their previous albums were appreciated by the crowd, with practically every person singing the lyrics of ‘Chasin’’, ‘Good Guys Go’ and ‘Hawaiian Party’ straight back at the stage… Not to mention, ‘Come On Mess Me Up’ got the waterworks flowing, and many were struck in awe by Zoe’s epic guitar solo.

Finally, to top it all off, was an encore of their cover of Billie Eilish’s, ‘When The Party’s Over’. The peak of the waterworks. Once again, Tim’s vocals were utterly perfect and full of passion and emotion, particularly as he sang back and forth with Sam. It was truly the perfect ending to a heavenly performance.
