FRINGE REVIEW: Velma Celli creates magic in ‘Equinox’

Be spellbound and bewitched by Velma Celli’s Equinox. Backed by Joe Louis Robinson and Lucy Fraser, this intimate cabaret number is filled with sentimental ballads and showstopping musical theatre hits. From the voices of Ursula and Elphaba, right through to Stevie Wonder and Judy Garland, this show had us under the spell of Velma’s renditions of showbiz’s favourite names..

Velma Celli is undeniably a true vocal powerhouse. Equinox is full of challenging songs that showcase Velma’s incredible range and technical ability (her vibrato is just gorgeous). However, the main highlight of the show is her natural ability to build rapport and engage with everyone. The perfect balance of sassy and sweet, Velma is sure to win you over with seemingly hardly any effort. If I had to pick one, I’d say that her version of ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ was my favourite. Getting the chance to hear Joe and Lucy sing solo was in itself a massive treat, and a very generous way of showing off Velma’s talented band.

As opposed to her other sell-out show, A Brief History of Drag, Equinox focuses more on the music and slightly less on the comedic aspects of the performance. This in no way subtracts from the show, especially if you’re a lover of incredible vocals and live music. As it stands, Velma Celli is a natural performer and easily establishes a stage presence that makes it so easy to just sit back and enjoy. If you didn’t get the chance to witness her this Fringe season, make sure you don’t miss out next time!
