FRINGE REVIEW: Super-Fanny-Tastic is, well, exactly that

Appropriately named, Super-Fanny-Tastic is a show about all things fannies. At least, that was what I gathered from the event preview. What I couldn’t figure out was exactly how this show was going to be presented and what attending it would entail. Curious and intrigued, I arrived at the venue unsure of what to expect, but excited to find out.

We walked in to stars of the show Clare Thomson, Angela Scaturro and Caitlin McFeat boogieing away to upbeat music. Their relaxed smiles and dance moves immediately lifted the mood as everyone settled in. What followed was a bit of an emotional roller coaster — absurdly funny stories of unfortunate waxing incidents, relatable childhood experiences and personal, intimate recounts that left the audience on the brink of tears. With a few hilariously questionable fun facts thrown in here and there, you couldn’t help but leave this show feeling slightly more educated, as well as amazed at the absurdity of some of them.

Directed by Michelle Endersbee, the genuine delivery, on-point comedic timing and plain likeableness of this show makes it well worth a watch. It’s not often you hear this much dialogue about the vagina, much less this much positive dialogue. That’s why it was so incredibly refreshing and empowering to watch three young women, unafraid and open, speaking out about their personal experiences and bringing honesty centre stage. However despite this, the acting had a bit of a limited range, but this was saved by the moving, heartfelt dialogue and actresses’ superb execution.

Funny, honest and informative, Super-Fanny-Tastic is a show straight from the heart. Thomson, Scaturro and McFeat must be commended for their genuine storytelling, strong stage presence and ability to make the audience laugh, cry and feel. Produced by MILK BOX Theatre Company, you won’t want to miss Super-Fanny-Tastic this Fringe season.
