LIVE REVIEW: Mosquito Coast hits home with their new sound

Playing their third and final show on their ‘Skipping Girl’ tour, Mosquito Coast revealed the first in line of many positive new comings in their return.

Dream pop was on the agenda for tonight, and simply put, something truly special was delivered. With a good handful of glittery new songs debuted, everyone was kept on their toes.

It’s been a year or so since Mosquito Coast have been active in the Perth music scene, and it’s been well worth the wait. Mosquito Coast’s new sound is impassioned, stronger than ever, and aching to be heard. From their dreamy synths and galactic keyboards to their gorgeous crooning vocals, the band is mature well beyond its years.

Working up a sweat with a bejewelled guitar and keyboards galore, lead vocalist Naomi Robinson led the reinvented band into the evening from song to song. With the addition of Oscar on drums, the dynamic had clearly changed with more members dealing front and centre. After a taste of their newer material, they launched into ‘Let’s Be Friends’, which was imbued with a sense of longingness and forlorn love. It was something certainly everyone could relate to.

Alongside the track ‘Commotion’, Mosquito Coast’s latest single ‘Skipping Girl’ shone out as a great example of their nostalgia-drenched dream pop. Yet despite a surprising lack of numbers, members of the audience were convinced and determined to have a good old groove. The talents of each band member were well showcased, with Conor (previously on drums) and Mitch (on bass) also pitching in to belt out many a chorus.

Considering the amicableness of the night — and even a tasteful hint of cowbell — everyone had effectively drifted off to a wonderful place and leaned into the rhythm.

One could even say we were truly the lucky few.
