Revelation Film Festival 2015 final preview: Our top picks

With WA's leading celebration of screen arts Revelation Perth International Film Festival barrelling full-speed towards the second half of this year's season, it's okay to feel a little dizzy from the spoils of their wonderful line-up. So many movies, so little time! But it's okay - take a deep breath, and calm your zits. We're here to help. We've combed through the remaining films of this season's Rev Film Fest program (curated by program director Jack Sargeant), and picked out the films that piqued our interests the most to help you with your movie marathon.

The Tribe

Hailed as "one of the most disturbing films of the year", Ukrainian drama The Tribe is a haunting deep-dive into the world of sign language, set in a Ukrainian boarding school for the deaf. The mostly-silent film boldly presents its narrative entirely in sign language, and does not provide audiences with the clarity of subtitles nor the comfort of a soundtrack. Absorbingly confronting and confusingly bleak, The Tribe will no doubt be one of the more visceral cinematic experiences you'll have this year.

The Look of Silence

A follow-up to his game-changing, Oscar-nominated (and Werner Herzog-produced) documentary The Act of Killing, acclaimed film maker Joshua Oppenheimer is back in full-force with this powerfully affecting sequel. A harrowing and unflinching expedition into the Indonesian massacres of 1965-1966, The Look of Silence is one of the MUST-SEE documentaries of the year.

Song of The Sea

This one is for all you raging animation fans out there (I'm a sucker for 2D animation, so this is right up my alley). Starring the voice of  Brendan Gleeson (The Meryl Streep of Ireland?) and nominated for an Academy Award, The Song of the Sea tells the an enchanting and visually-stunning tale that is based on the myth of Selkies of Irish folklore - who live as seals in the sea but become humans on land.

Gameloading: Rise of the Indies

There's almost a film for everyone at this year's Rev Film Fest program, and Gameloading: Rise of the Indies is one for the game enthusiasts (or budding sociologists) out there. The documentary is a fascinating peek into the world of independent games through its diverse and insightful cast of developers (the who's who of indie games, if you will), along with a contemplation of what it's rising popularity means to gaming culture today.

SCREENING DEETS:

Do I Sound Gay?

Is there such a thing as a "gay" voice? Why do some people sound more "gay" than others? In this riveting and humorous documentary, journalist David Thorpe sets off to investigate the cultural history of the "gay voice" phenomenon, along with its underlying impact on contemporary society, with the help of acting coaches, linguists, friends, and  LGBT icons such as Dan Savage, George Tekei, Tim Gunn, David Sedaris, and Margaret Cho
