Parents and Technology

Technology is a wonderful thing when used properly, it can make our lives so much easier; but what absolutely baffles me is some of the ways our parents and grandparents are trying to use it.

Now I was one of the last people in the world to get a smartphone, even after my mum got a HTC and my grandparents had two iPads and the first thing I did when I got it was become addicted to Facebook and double my texts per day. It's so easy to become dependent on your phone! If I can't feel it in my pocket I get as nervous as a junkie without a fix. Not to mention when I find it again there will be about six missed calls from my mum.

My mum is like me- addicted to her phone. But it's one of those things that should be used for good- not evil. When I'm at work, my mum will call me. I can't always call back- BECAUSE I'M AT WORK- and if I don't, she freaks the shit out. There was one time she left about 12 missed calls on my phone and all she wanted to tell me was that she would be working the next day. I thought someone had died!

The other thing she likes to do is text my boyfriend to embarrass me. She asks for their number under the pretence of 'in case of an emergency' and then waits till I ignore one of her calls. She then rings my poor unsuspecting guy and says something along the lines of: "Now I'm in *insert crockery shop* and I just wondered what pattern you'd prefer on your wedding china..."  which leaves my poor boyfriend with no idea what she's talking about or what I might've said to make her think we were getting married.  I'm not making this up. The woman is a danger to society. The plus side is she only does this to guys she likes, so I always know they have mums stamp of approval! Whatever that's worth....

Now I adore my mother. She is a strong, powerful role model, if a little strange at times, and when people smirk and say: "Wow, you're a lot like your mum", nine times out of ten I take it as a compliment. But my mum and technology are just one of those things that should be kept well away from each other. Like Vegemite and lemons (NEVER A GOOD IDEA).

Mum called me today to tell me she is hooked on a game called 'Candy Crush'. Now I've never played this game because I lose interest too quickly in things but mum spent a good 15 minutes on the phone to me, going on about this game. That can't be healthy! Now I don't know about you but I think if my mum has enough time to play that- she has enough time to be making me cakes and cookies and posting them to me. Which she is not doing. Sadly.

In my job, I come across a lot of B List celebrities week to week and one bigger one we had was Hilary Clinton. Naturally I texted my mum to tell her about this, and you can see her response below. I swear to god this was her genuine text message.

I don't understand how she seems to have gotten the idea that you can't just invent your own shortcuts and expect people to understand. I don't know how the original ones were created (omg, lol etc), but I'm pretty sure they were written in the back of the bible or something. They've been around forever! I'm genuinely concerned about an outbreak of these rogue abbreviations. It could cause extreme chaos on social networking and bring life as we know it to an end.

Oh- and she's created a Facebook for her dog. Mia Bradstock. If you want a good laugh- go and like the page. It's technically my little brothers dog, and I mean we've all heard of the pages where people can 'friend' pets, but my mum actually updates Mia's status. The weirdest bit is- there's about 18 people that are actually subscribing to these updates, and not even for the hilarious reason that I've suggested, to laugh at it! It makes me sad there are people who actually care about Mia chewing on a shoe or getting a new jumper. When my mum starts checking Mia into places- I'm putting her in a home.

Oh, speaking of technology- I'm now on Twitter! @perthsoundchic and @isolatednation will keep you in the loop. Until next time!
